- Summary
The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) is an effort to create an international standard in XML for metadata describing social science data. The DDI is a specification for describing social science data in XML. Essentially, the DDI is a way of formatting the documentation for a social science data file, such that it is much more useful than a simple MS Word or text file. The tagged structure enables computer processing of the information.
The beta testing of the DDI DTD began in March 1999 and at its conclusion the approved changes were incorporated into Version 1.0, published March 2000. Several enhancements to Version 1.0 of the DTD were made subsequently, with the most recent stable version of the DTD published as Version 2.0 in July 2003.
